Job Description

Leads the technologists in conducting polysomnographic testing, analysis, and associated interventions. Performs quality control checks.

Job Responsibility

  • Gives guidance to Polysomnography Technologists, interviews patient and gathers patient history, physical information, medications, procedure requests, studies protocols, identifies and assesses any signs, symptoms, special factors and co-morbid conditions and completes and verifies documentation.
  • Provides patient education, communicates procedure, and answers questions to ease apprehension and produce comfort and cooperation, as well as prepares and calibrates equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and applies electrodes and sensors according to policy and procedure.
  • Performs appropriate physiologic calibrations and adjustments, performs positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting, follows procedural protocols to ensure accurate polysomnographic data acquisition and identifies and reports signal abnormalities.
  • Documents routine observations, including sleep stages, clinical events, procedural changes and other significant events in order to facilitate interpretation and scoring of polysomnography results.
  • Documents daytime polysomnographic recordings, such as polysomnography (PSG), Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) and Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) studies and generates reports of sleep/wake and clinical event data tabulations.
  • Implements appropriate interventions, including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment and education of all age groups as well as complies with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures regarding safety and infection control issues.
  • Disinfects and performs preventative maintenance on equipment according to established protocols as well as troubleshoots equipment issues and reports malfunctions to management, as well as completes required billing information forms, as required.
  • Scores sleep/wake stages following established policies and procedures.
  • Scores clinical events including respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc., within center specific protocols and generates accurate reports for study interpretation.

Job Qualification

  • Bachelor's Degree required, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Current License to practice as a Polysomnograph Technologist in New York State, and Current Basic Life Support Professional Certification required, plus specialized certifications as needed.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience and 2+ years of leadership / management experience, required.
  • Scoring tech. experience preferred.
