The Scientist is responsible for designing, executing, and overseeing scientific research projects, applying advanced methodologies and techniques to explore and expand knowledge within a specific discipline. They lead experiments, analyze data, and interpret results while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to achieve research goals.

The Single Cell Biology laboratory is a research-driven multidisciplinary core service within The Jackson Laboratory, providing state-of-the-art single cell, spatial assays and 3D/2D High Content Screening (HCS) capabilities to the research community and its stakeholders. The workforce in the Single Cell Biology laboratory comprises a leadership team (Director and Associate Director), Ph.D. level staff scientists, cellular biologists and specialists, and computational analysts. The Staff Scientist track encompasses the Ph.D. level staff whose primary responsibilities are to lead team, technology-based platforms and key developments of cutting-edge technologies. Within the Single Cell Biology laboratory, Staff Scientists are expected to be domain experts in SCBL technologies.

We are seeking an experienced and innovative Staff Scientist to lead the state-of-the-art 3D High Content Screening (HCS) platform within the Single cell Biology lab. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and advancing the platform, leading the HCS team, which is pivotal in our laboratory's research and development efforts for the cellular model JAX's initiative. This role requires a blend of expertise in technical skills for 3D cellular culture, induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (iPSC) technologies, cell differentiation, automation and liquid handling, cell screening and high content data analysis, single cell assays, image data analysis, computational skills, as well as a strong background in biological sciences and management and mentoring skills. The candidate should be proficient at 2D and 3D primary/organoid cell line derivation, stem cell/organoid differentiation, image data analysis, single cell analysis of cell/3D organoids. This role requires advanced expertise and communication skills for all stakeholders and interaction with faculties and researchers.

Responsibilities

* Design, plan, and execute experiments, applying advanced scientific principles and methodologies within the field.
* Analyze and interpret experimental data using statistical tools and software, drawing meaningful conclusions and identifying trends.
* Prepare research findings for publication in scientific journals, present at conferences, and communicate discoveries to peers and stakeholders.
* Lead research initiatives, setting objectives, timelines, and strategies to achieve project goals.
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams, providing guidance and mentorship to junior researchers, fostering a collaborative research environment.
* Contribute to grant proposals, securing funding for research projects, and managing budgets effectively.
* Focus on evaluating, improving or developing cutting-edge technologies aligning with the SCBL strategy, conducting in-depth analyses to understand technical basis of the assays, variability and applicability to research programs ongoing at JAX.
* Collaborate closely with researchers and other scientific services to integrate new technical advancement/assays into research strategies, ensuring alignment between research needs and scientific services.
* Write and lead new grant applications for RnD work in collaboration with faculties
* Lead research and RnD aimed at designing new assays, technology development for new service establishment
* Team leadership: manages a team of cellular biologists direct reports
* Reports directly to the SCBL director*

Qualifications

* Proven track record of conducting high-quality scientific research, evidenced by publications in reputable journals and successful project leadership.
* Proficiency in specific methodologies, tools, and instrumentation pertinent to the SCBL area.
* Strong leadership, project management, and mentorship abilities to guide and inspire a team of researchers, cellular biologist and bioinformatic analists.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills for presenting findings, collaborating with peers, and writing grant proposals.
* Ability to innovate, propose novel approaches, and solve complex scientific problems.
* Flexibility to adapt to changing research needs and technologies.
* Strong networking skills to establish collaborations and partnerships within the scientific community.
* Ability to develop long-term research strategies aligned with organizational goals.

* Proficiency in identifying and validating novel and innovative technologies and assays, crucial for advancing innovative research through scientific servicing and supporting researchers.
* Ability to analyze and interpret diverse datasets, including genomic data, to extract meaningful insights that could inform research directions.
* Develop and maintain a network of collaborations with research institutions, scientific services cores, and industry partners focused on single cell, spatial omics and functional 'omics to facilitate knowledge exchange and accelerate development efforts.

Degree Requirements

PhD in a related field as well as 4-6 years of professional experience

Pay Range: $90,384 - $144,614
