Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) provides the educational outreach functions for Cornell University's role as New York State's Land Grant University. Harvest New York is an innovative Cornell Cooperative Extension team that focuses on workforce development and business expansion projects that increase profitability and investment in key sectors of New York's agriculture industry. What You Will Do


As part of the Urban Agriculture team, you will provide leadership and delivery of educational programming related to community gardening, including production, harvesting, food safety, sustainability, nutrition, food access and other social and environmental justice issues as identified. You will create innovative or alternative (to existing delivery models) educational programs that meet programmatic and community needs as well as changing regional and statewide issues. Specific duties include:

  • Providing expertise and support for the application of sustainable gardening practices and other emerging urban growing strategies.
  • Implementing targeted research and education programs on garden-based learning practices, procedures, techniques and skills that will result in positive behavioral and/or practice change over time, including human nutrition.
  • Utilizing industry-based research to develop educational materials and programs.
  • Implementing program evaluation, analyzing collected data, and making recommendations for improvements.
  • Networking with CCE NYC nutrition educators to develop educational strategies in support of gardener nutrition programming.
  • Develop community garden advisory and workgroups to identify priorities and guide the development of research and extension programs.

What We Need


We are looking for a talented individual who excels at building relationships with multiple stakeholders to identify and address the needs of urban and community gardeners. We need someone who has an appreciation for urban agriculture wants to increase the presence of community gardens. In this role, you will work within Brooklyn, New York and contribute to multiple teams while developing your unique program. Additionally, we need someone who has:

  • Bachelor's degree in agricultural or horticultural sciences, human nutrition, agriculture and natural resource economics, agriculture production and technologies, business and marketing, entrepreneurship, or related field of studies and 3+ years of experience in horticulture or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Evidence of adult/youth teaching or educational programming.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and develop programming for diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of sustainable urban growing practices, including crop production in soil integrated pest management (IPM), irrigation, and soil fertility, including urban soil heavy metal testing, analysis, and remediation strategies.
  • Experience working with audiences and volunteers from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Flexible work schedule required for delivering evening and weekend educational programs and activities as determined by clientele availability and needs.
  • Experience that demonstrates sound judgment, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group in a professional and respectful work environment.
  • Ability to plan and anticipate potential issues as well as identify solutions.
  • Must have the ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
  • Fundamental competence in utilizing current technology as a management and program delivery tool (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, Internet, Social Media, and Web development).
  • Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position.
  • Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and well-being.
  • Ability to serve as an advocate for individuals of all ethnicities, genders, ages, and backgrounds.

  • Master's degree in agricultural or horticultural sciences, human nutrition, agriculture and natural resource economics, agriculture production and technologies, business and marketing, entrepreneurship, or related field of studies.
  • Gardening or composting certificate from a non-profit gardening organization or botanical garden (e.g., BUGS, NYBG Bronx GreenUp, etc.).

This position is full-time and will be located at the CCE Urban Agriculture Program, Brooklyn, New York.


This is a one-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.
