Cornell Tech leads a nationwide initiative called Break Through Tech which was launched in 2016. Break Through Tech offers programming to college students and partnerships to employers nationwide; working at the intersection of industry and academia to propel more underrepresented students into tech education and careers.


Position Summary

As an integral member of Break Through Tech's External Relations team, the Digital Communications Associate must thrive in a dynamic and continuously evolving environment and be able to independently identify resources to solve problems of varying complexity. This position requires strong organizational skills and experience in stakeholder management, with the ability to set priorities and direct ongoing activities in parallel, manage competing demands, and provide timely responses to urgent issues. The position requires a flexible, entrepreneurial spirit with the ability to connect academic culture and curriculum to real-world industry needs and culture, as well as demonstrated excellence in developing and managing both personal and professional relationships.


The Digital Communications Associate for Break Through Tech will utilize their digital, design, writing, and organizational skills to produce content. In addition, the Associate will be responsible for content strategy, project management, digital infrastructure planning, social media management, coordinating content production and plans with Cornell Tech's External Affairs and the University Relations teams, and more.


The Digital Communications Specialist works closely with the Cornell Tech External Affairs and the University Relations teams to:

  • Promote Break Through Tech, Cornell Tech and Cornell University and its core strategic messages in digital outlets, primarily social media.
  • Strengthen the Break Through Tech and Cornell Tech brands and engage our community on new media platforms by producing creative and compelling content.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Maintain effective communication efforts with departments to reinforce and enhance awareness of the Break Through Tech, Cornell Tech and Cornell University brands .
  • Managing front- and back-end projects with internal and external vendors.
  • Identifying and updating the WordPress website, including but not limited to modifying templates and modules as needed. Maintain and update all web copy, ensuring information is routinely updated as needed.
  • Pitching, writing, and editing content for web (and social); covering events and programs
  • Becoming a subject matter expert on Break Through Tech's style guide to serve as a proofreader of all marketing content.
  • Maintaining the brand guide, including developing and managing bi-annual updates to the guide and all templates in Canvas.
  • Managing day-to-day responsibilities for social media, including oversight of the editorial plan and leading an engagement strategy based on analytics reports you will prepare with recommendations.
  • Collaborate with others to develop internal and external communication goals using various print and/or electronic media methods.
  • Managing the quarterly newsletter; ensure draft-through distribution should align with the annual editorial plan.
  • Manage, organize, and respond to requests for images and digital assets (art, photography, graphics, etc)
  • Provide support, at times guidance and leadership, with photo and video shoots.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible 3-year term position with the possibility of renewal. This is a hybrid remote role with expectation to report to the Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island in New York City one day per week. The associate is expected to be on campus for key meetings and events. This position requires occasional work on evenings and weekends. Visa Sponsorship is not available for this position.


Essential Functions Include

CONTENT DEVELOPMENT - 40%

  • Lead content development and distribution; shepherding large and small scale projects to publication on web and social media (including engagement).
  • Manage the (now) quarterly newsletter; draft through distribution should align with the annual editorial plan.
  • Manage day-to-day responsibilities for social media, including oversight of the editorial plan, monitoring mentions, and creating quarterly reports.
  • Write all web content.
  • Oversee the design and production of collateral materials and multimedia assets, provide templates and guidance.

BRAND STRATEGY & PLANNING- 30%

  • Integrate the brand promise, vision, and position into all forms of marketing and communications.
  • Work directly with key internal and external stakeholders to support the development and roll out of a central communications strategy. This includes, but isn't limited to shaping the editorial direction (including production timelines) for communications materials, both internal and external.
  • Oversee central brand assets (including the brand); responsible for updates, improvement and onboarding and external stakeholders to the brand as needed.
  • Manage the photo and video archives; curate images/video as needed. Sometimes serving as the in-house photographer or videographer and sometimes coordinating services with third party vendors.
  • Coordinate support and promote collaboration among communications activities at the affiliate sites, including spotlighting strong practices, creating and sharing of templates and advising as needed.

PLATFORM MANAGEMENT & ANALYTICS - 15%

  • Management of all social channels
  • Lead contact for web; this includes collaborating with the support team (developers), serving as the clearinghouse for inquiries and projects
  • Responsible for data collection and analytics relevant to the performance of our communications strategy.

TOOLS AND BEST PRACTICES- 10%

  • Assist with developing and formalizing project requirements/scope; assign resources and set project deadlines.
  • Implement and maintain standards to be used by the national program office and affiliate sites (templates, accessibility on web and social, etc. as best practices evolve)
  • Establish forums among and across affiliate sites to share best practices
  • Establish new and maintain existing tools that support marketing and communications efforts, such as Hootsuite, CANVA, the Master Comms Calendar.
  • Research and compile data for the purpose of analyzing issues, audiences and competitor trends as part of situational analyses.
  • Coordinate with Cornell University's communications team (within the Division of University Relations) to ensure alignment with university-wide media relations, branding and related communications protocols.

OTHER POSITION-RELATED RESPONSIBILITIES - 5%

  • Participate in projects with occasional work responsibility falling above or below current classification.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field and 2 to 4 years of experience in communications, design, project management, digital asset management, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Highly proactive, organized, efficient, detail-oriented, able to follow detailed instruction.
  • Proven ability to multitask successfully and meet deadlines
  • Exceptional writing, communication, and design skills.
  • Experience managing content in a CMS (wordpress)
  • Experience with Asana or similar project management tools.
  • Experience with MailChimp or similar newsletter management tools.
  • Experience with Canvas, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Premiere, Bridge, Acrobat, InDesign, and Illustrator).
  • Self-driven, capable of taking ownership of tasks and seeing them through to delivery
  • Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of AP Style. Experience with Wordpress.
  • Additional relevant experience.
