Job Description

Position Summary

The Center for Career Education (CCE) helps undergraduate students and alumni develop the key competencies necessary to make informed decisions and take the necessary steps to achieve their career goals. The Center establishes connections and facilitates interaction among students, alumni, employers and organizations to generate opportunities that help students pursue their personal and professional objectives. CCE serves students in Columbia College, The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the School of General Studies, and collaborates with the Career Centers in the other schools at Columbia University and its affiliated institutions.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, working as part of the Experiential Education team to develop bespoke internship, mentorship, exploration, and short-term experiential programs for undergraduate students across disciplines. The incumbent will be required to assist in the implementation of programs and take responsibility for educating and informing students about the benefits of the programs. This will include contributing to marketing and communications, offering information sessions to advertise and publicize opportunities, assisting in the organization and facilitation of career development support offered as part of the programs and encouraging all student participants to utilize the resources of the Center to find their next opportunity. They will also offer career counseling to all program participants and other clients at CCE.

  • Provide individual and group counseling to students engaged or participating in experiential education programs. Work closely with student participants to help them secure future opportunities. Participate in the Center's daily 'quick questions' rotation for career counseling as well as conduct one-on-one counseling appointments with students and career development workshops. Work with the Experiential Education team to deliver programs designed to enhance the experiential opportunities offered to all students.

  • Work closely with the Associate Dean of Experiential Education and the Experiential Education team to coordinate student involvement and participation in CCE internship programs. Along with the Associate and Assistant Directors, publicize opportunities, and develop and execute strategy to market the benefits of the programs and inform students about application processes and application preparation. Act as primary coordinator for pre-program training for all program participants. Act as the point of contact for students interested in CCE's internship programs. The Program Counselor will also be required to take responsibility for managing all logistics and execution of programs as determined based on organizational need.
  • Conduct industry and other career related research to help the development of more experiential learning programs, workshops and international and domestic internship opportunities. Manage outreach to employers and alumni participating in the internship programs. Liaise closely with the Employer and Alumni Relations and Administration and Planning teams to follow-up with employers interested in CCE's new and existing programs.

  • Work closely with the Experiential Education team to coordinate the process by which Columbia students are selected for CCE internship programs.

  • Participate in CCE program planning and assist other counselors/staff with implementation of programming and all staff initiatives.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent required.
  • Desire to help students gain internship and other professional experiences; excellent career counseling and program development experience required.
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills and ability to work within a diverse, small team required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Microsoft Dynamics CRM strongly desired.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant area preferred.

  • 1-3 years related experience in career services, student affairs, graduate recruitment, university relations and/or marketing, or the equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
  • Valid Driver's license and ability to travel on behalf of CCE to develop and maintain relationships with employers and alumni nationally and internationally.
