Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Post Baccalaureate Research Assistant position in the Department of Chemistry. The Post Baccalaureate Research Assistant is a full-time, fixed-term position, starting at $20.16 per hour. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

This is a one-year, limited-term appointment as a full-time post-baccalaureate research assistant in the Wisconsin lab for the period from June 1, 2024, through May 31, 2025.

The primary responsibilities will involve executing and publishing an independent research project, partnering with current Amherst College undergraduates to help move forward their thesis research projects, and training new undergraduate research students.

Additional responsibilities include taking appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participating in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Lab-Based Chemistry Research
  • Execute basic air-free and moisture-free organic reactions
  • Perform routine separations and characterization of synthesized materials


Data Analysis and Scientific Writing
  • Analyze 1H NMR and GCMS data
  • Complete literature review
  • Will contribute to the writing of research articles and grants submitted by the lab
  • Design figures using a suite of software including Excel, ChemDraw, MNova, Illustrator


Lab Maintenance
  • Maintain a clean and safe lab space, wash glassware, manage chemical waste, etc.


Qualifications:

Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry by time of employment
  • Must have at least one year of experience executing supervised synthetic organic chemistry research
  • Demonstrated interest in carrying out independent research
  • Excellent organizational skills as well as strong verbal and written communication
  • Ability to work collaboratively and the desire to train and support undergraduate students with various levels of research experience
  • Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community


Preferred
  • Experience with NMR, GCMS, Excel, ChemDraw, MNova, and Adobe Illustrator
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate research students
