Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Associate II within the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. The primary purpose of the Research Associate II position is to conduct specialized research, using judgement to adapt methods and techniques. May assist the PI in managing a small-sized laboratory area. Assists the Principal Investigator (PI) with budgetary, training and administrative responsibilities. Incumbent will work in the area of cancer metabolism. In addition, Process Development Specialist trains and guides junior laboratory personnel including interns, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows, and provides assistance in the preparation of manuscripts, grant applications and slides for scientific presentations. Assists with all aspects of technical and biological validation of the procedures developed by investigators as well as assisting the PI with the preparation and submission of documentation for compliance with regulatory entities needed for the use of human or animal material as well as reagents that requires biosafety approval.

The current focus of Guo lab is to explore the cancer metabolism in KRAS-driven lung cancer and identify metabolic vulnerabilities for potential therapeutic intervention. The candidate will have the opportunity to join a highly translational laboratory.
Among the key duties for this position are the following:

  • Design, execute, and analyze research experiments related to cancer metabolism in KRAS-driven lung cancer under the direction of the principal investigator. Incumbent performs various research and clinical technical operations independently or as assigned, relating to investigatory activities of the laboratory, followed by appropriate reports, recommendations, and conclusions.
  • Under the direction of the principal investigator: investigates, reviews, modifies, develops, and tests new analytical procedures and methodologies.
  • As requested, assists in the implementation of programs and projects in special areas of interest to the division or department, conferring with the individuals involved. Assists with the preparations of proposals, formal applications, and justification for grant applications. Assists in the development of budget proposals for the laboratory area, with specific projections regarding future equipment and manpower needs.
  • As requested, assists in organizing, leading and conducting highly specialized research activity for a particular research project. Assists in writing grant applications, fellowships, annual progress reports and manuscripts. Reviews and analyzes scientific data, scientific reports, publications, and other documents pertaining to current research developments. Must possess effective oral and written communication skills and ability to publish scientific research papers/articles. Gives oral presentations of the research at lab meetings and conferences. Functions as scientific consultant in areas pertaining to specific expertise.
  • Assists with leading the instruction, training and mentoring of residents, fellows, medical students, research assistants and laboratory technicians in laboratory technique, physiological procedures, and instrumentation to develop the skill necessary to perform the required functions.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • An PhD in Biological Science, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology or related field required, or a Master's Degree in a relevant science plus three (3) years of related research experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Effective oral and written communication skills are required.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively is also essential.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe products.
  • Must be competent in standard laboratory techniques, mouse models of cancer, and knowledge in genomics and/or bioinformatics, including R or MATLAB, is desirable. INTERRELATIONSHIPS: Professional interaction with RUTGERS, RWJMS, CINJ, and RWJUH management, administrative, clinical and laboratory staff.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior background in the field's cancer metabolism and/or protein homeostasis; documented training and certification to conduct small animal research; demonstrated ability to secure independent grant funding and background in cancer biology research as evidenced by a strong publication record in the field, strongly preferred.
  • Experience in writing grants, fellowships, manuscripts and scientific reports.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Laboratory Environment. Moderate noise. Exposure to blood, excrement, antineoplastic drugs and possible exposure to infectious and communicable diseases. Universal precautions are mandatory. Exposure to hazardous chemicals.
