Job Overview:

The Menu Technician orrects menu in accordance with prescribed diet, maintains updated Computrition Computerized diet office system, and performs professional communication skills in the diet office. Is responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments (i.e. damaged floors/walls/ceiling tiles/unsecured areas) and medical errors, etc.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Preferred:

  • Hospital experience in food services or nutritional care

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Shifts vary such as 5:30am-2:00pm, 8:00am-4:30pm, and 11:00am-7:30pm
  • Rotating weekends and holidays
  • Per Diem

Essential Functions:

  • All patients meal tickets are processed against diet and allergen information from the clinical information system. The menu technician reviewed the items listed on the tray ticket to cross check for accuracy
  • Completes tally sheets to include special food item request in a timely and accurate manner, and properly notifies Food Service Staff / Production Staff / Supervisor of needs in a timely manner
  • Coordinates efficient communication in the diet office by answering phones, relaying information to the appropriate personnel and processing information from the computer, printer and fax machine. Ensures timely processing of Exception messages during the meal period
  • Demonstrates ability to complete allergen verification for patient information in clinical system compared to the diet office management system. Utilizes the appropriate steps to alert tray line of allergen patients
  • Demonstrates competency in all Diet Office Management programs utilized during the normal operations of the diet office, including menu data entry, meal processing and monitoring/action of automatic reports printed during the meal process
  • Demonstrates competency in performing assigned duties for each of three different shifts in the diet office, including work flow for meal processing and menu correction according to diet and / or unit based restrictions
  • Demonstrates positive patient / staff interaction while on patient units for menu pick up as well as positive telephone etiquette. Utilizes the resources of the department (Supervisor, Clinical Nutrition Staff, and Production Staff) to maximize patient satisfaction while meeting the patient s nutritional needs and maintaining compliance with diet order restrictions
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her unit. Utilizes menu correction guidelines as appropriate for manual diet order correction for restricted diets including, but not limited to: Celiac Disease, Multiple Allergens, Diabetes, Cardiac, Fluid restrictions and Consistency Modifications
  • During a downtime of the Clinical system, Admitting system, Diet Office Management system or combination of multiple systems the menu technician is able to manually process menus / maintain down time logs and ensure patients receive accurate meals in a timely manner. Demonstrates knowledge of manually running reports from both the Clinical and Diet Office Management systems
  • Follows the facility and departmental policies and procedures related to electronic device use, social media, HIPPA and corporate compliance
  • Maintains updated electronic cardex system. Able to manually enter patient preferences / dislikes in the cardex. Able to manually enter patient into cardex when not in the diet office management system notifies manager for troubleshooting issues, as well as RD covering unit to enter the diet order
  • Menu pick up rate of at least 90% for units covered by utilizing the work flow as well as calling patients via telephone, and completing a minimum of 2nd unit pick up for all primary units for the position covered
  • Performs duties assigned in supervisors absence, including, but not limited to notification to the clinical nutrition staff for troubleshooting needs, communication with supervisors / patient care units of any delays for meal service and notification to ITS and / or Diet Office Management help desk for any computer / printer issues
  • Prepares menus / tray tickets for tray line accurately and in a timely manner. Utilizes the proper work flow steps to ensure that menus / tray tickets are processed accordingly. Completes timely action on meal processes which are run during meal period to ensure patients receive their food tray in an efficient time frame
  • Restocks and photocopies office materials as needed. Ensures printers are clear and all reports / menus are filed at the end of the evening as well as data entry is completed for all patient menus which came back to office during the dinner meas. Maintains adequate menu supply for both emergency situations and daily use
  • Utilizes appropriate phone etiquette at all times, including proper use of the hold and transfer button. Assists with answering phones during the day, and does not rely on the front desk as the sole shift responsible to handle phone calls
