Volunteers of America-Greater New York (VOA-Greater New York) is an anti-poverty organization working to end homelessness in the New York area by 2050. We operate over 60 programs across New York City, Northern New Jersey and Westchester County including emergency, transitional and permanent housing. Our services extend to families experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, people living with HIV/AIDS, veterans, youth aging out of foster care, adults with behavioral health or substance use needs, and others in need, including a special education preschool program.

We are in search of new talent in the following position...

Position: Youth Advocate

The Youth Advocate will teach the young adult how to live in a shared apartment setting and link to resources within the community. They will meet with the young adult once a week and provide groups to build healthy living skills, communication and conflict resolution.

Transitional Living Program assists youth in preparing for life as adults. Our staff teach and prepare youth in the program in the areas of job preparation, navigating housing options and financial literacy to manage paychecks, bills, and savings. Minimum Qualifications:
The position requires a Bachelor's degree with two years of related experience in working with young adults (18 to 24 years old). Experience with providing Evidence Based Practices with youth-centered interventions using Housing First Principles, Positive Youth Development and Trauma-Informed Care is essential to this position. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. This position shall also have a valid state driver's license with a safe driving record that meets agency policies.

Youth Advocate Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Manage the intake and assessment process to orient the young adult to the program and
    produce a comprehensive assessment of their service needs.
  2. Develop with young adult a mutually agreed-upon individual service plan reflecting assessment findings and setting case management goals. Update the plan as required.
  3. Meet with young adult once a week to assist him/her in obtaining needed services/benefits to achieve their individual service plan goals. Provide counseling that is supportive and strengthens his/her ability to make appropriate life decisions.
  4. Responsible for carrying a case load, consisting of 15 youths. Document case management activities in a confidential, timely, and concise manner in accordance to agency and funder guidelines. Collect service data and participate in evaluation and quality assurance activities.
  5. Provision of 24/7 on-call consultation and support.
  6. Perform related tasks as needed.
