Volunteers of America-Greater New York (VOA-Greater New York) is an anti-poverty organization working to end homelessness in the New York area by 2050. We operate over 60 programs across New York City, Northern New Jersey and Westchester County including emergency, transitional and permanent housing. Our services extend to families experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, people living with HIV/AIDS, veterans, youth aging out of foster care, adults with behavioral health or substance use needs, and others in need, including a special education preschool program.

We are in search of new talent in the following position...

Position: Controller - Hybrid Remote Schedule

The Controller is responsible for managing designated financial operations of the organization, including accounting, auditing, and administration. Innovative, hands-on individual with eight years of increasing not-for-profit experience in a highly complex operating environment with at least $40 million in annual revenues and expenses. Strong GAAP theoretical and practical knowledge and ability to prepare both internal management reports (monthly), account analysis (monthly) and audited financial statements (annual). This individual will assume responsibility for Treasury (bank recs, cash receipts), financial accounting (monthly close and financial statement analysis and reporting) and provide extensive supervision of grants and billing.

Demonstrated experience as one of the key liaisons to external auditor for a complex organization required. Strong interpersonal, communication and conceptual skills and related supervisory experience. Expertise in report writing and utilization of accounting software to improve analysis and efficiency in reporting. Knowledge of PC-based accounting system in a network environment. Expertise with Excel/Word. Capable of taking independent action and taking initiative to recommend and implement required improvements. Ability to lead direct reports and persuade peer colleagues through clear communication and follow-through.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with major in accounting / business, active CPA required and 8 years increasing experience in not-for-profit.

Controller Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Manage designated staff.
  2. Manage all core accounting functions.
  3. Manage Assistant Controller of Financial Reporting and Treasury in his/her roles related to financial reporting, including VOA - National reporting and preparation of Financial Management Report (Parent and Consolidated financials), bank reconciliations, cash receipt process flow, etc.
  4. Collaborate with Controller II - Budget & Disbursements in preparation of annual budgets by recommending reporting improvements through efficient utilization of Microsoft Business Central.
  5. Supervise Assistant Controller - Disbursements in all activities regarding disbursements, including accounts payable and payroll.
  6. Serve as the liaison in the process and preparation of annual external, A-133 and governmental agency audits. Prepare the annual Proforma 990 and Consolidated Financial Reports in collaboration with Controller II and AVP Finance.
  7. Supervision of staff preparing VOA-GNY financial management report, audited financial statements and internal management reports. Ensure monthly general ledger close adheres to deadlines and that for each close used in a quarterly meeting, that a first close occurs to allowing Controller II and NJ Business Manager to review and feedback to be incorporated.
  8. Key reviewer of all material (>$50,000) journal entries for both VOA-GNY and its related entities and with the AVP - Finance, monthly review and sign-off on all due to and due from accounts and monthly review and sign-off on accuracy of any property (i.e. rental income, expenses of buildings) transactions recorded to VOA-GNY.
  9. Annual duties include recordation of lease asset and liability accounts and denied benefit pension tie-in to annual actuarial valuation.
