POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Interdisciplinary Science (IS) Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate for a one-year appointment with an opportunity for a one-year renewal to perform research in the area of electric power grids.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform modeling and simulation of electrical power systems.
  • Perform research on power system dynamics and control under high inverter-based resources (IBRs).
  • Develop and apply artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) techniques for power system planning, operation, control, and security.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A PhD. in electrical engineering or related field of study, with a broad knowledge of electric power systems.
  • Demonstrated background in artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) applications in the power grid.
  • Experience with power system modeling, simulation, dynamics and/or optimization, phasor and electromagnetic transient (EMT)-based modeling, and Python and/or Matlab programming.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, be willing to take direction, and be able to work with others as part of a project team.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with commonly used tools such as OPAL-RT/RTDS, PSS/E, or PSCAD.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity of industrial control systems and/or quantum computing.

Other:

  • BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.
  • Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $70000 - $106000 /year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
