Primary Responsibilities

HDR is looking to hire a Traffic Engineer in our NYC office who will help lead and grow the traffic engineering/planning practice in the NY/NJ market. The selected individual will also have the opportunity to work on projects across the country from other HDR offices. The overarching responsibilities for the position include production assignments on traffic and cross-disciplinary projects, support development of junior staff, lead tasks and support HDR business development.

Projects will range from traditional traffic engineering/planning studies to innovative solution development with advanced technologies for surface transportation. The range of projects that the individual in this position will work on may include:

  • Conceptual Design plans
  • Maintenance of Traffic Plans
  • Local, regional and statewide multimodal transportation plans
  • Corridor studies
  • Traffic engineering studies
  • Highway/roadway safety analyses
  • Travel demand forecasting
  • Transportation planning reports
  • Transit studies (rail and bus)
  • Bicycle and pedestrian studies
  • Corridor signal timing and optimization
  • Traffic signal design / ITS design
  • ITS planning and system future-proofing
  • Roadway and bridge projects with major traffic analysis and design components
  • Design-build projects with major traffic analysis and design components
  • Transportation research

Must be able to independently manage large and small transportation projects. Would be responsible for developing business relationships through client interaction, project pursuits, and general marketing activities.

    • Bachelor's degree in Civil/Traffic/Transportation Engineering or closely related field,
    • PE is required
    • Strong verbal and written skills.
    • Active involvement in professional societies desirable.
    • Analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and written/verbal communication skills.
    • An attitude and commitment to participation in our employee-owned culture is a must.
    • Traffic engineering/planning experience with New York/New Jersey agencies, or equivalent DOT experience required.

    Preferred qualifications

    • MS preferred.
    • Programming skills/exposure (VBA, Python, Javascript), ArcGIS a plus.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, AutoCAD or Microstation, HCS, Synchro, Vissim, Aimsun a plus
    • 5+ years traffic engineering/transportation planning experience.
    • Candidates who reside locally are preferred.

The expected compensation range for this position is $87,675 - $125,250 depending upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions. Temporary and part-time roles eligible for limited benefits.)
