Job Description

Columbia University School of the Arts invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor of Theatre Arts (playwriting: tenure-track/tenured) in the Faculty of the Arts. We seek a full-time faculty member of distinction in playwriting, with a proven track record of well-received productions of their original plays and substantial expertise in guiding and mentoring emerging playwrights. The successful candidate will oversee the MFA Playwriting Concentration starting either January 1, 2025 or July 1, 2025. Duties include: leading in the selection of MFA playwriting candidates; teaching and mentoring students; and recommending part-time adjunct faculty for appointment for classes in theatre, film, and television writing. The Program aims to attract a dynamic and dedicated teacher with a commitment to service and collaboration across disciplines with the Directing, Dramaturgy, and Acting Concentrations.

The Columbia University School of the Arts offers Masters of Fine Arts Degrees in four disciplines: Film, Theatre, Visual Arts and Writing; a Masters of Arts degree in Film Studies; and undergraduate majors in Creative Writing, Film Studies and Visual Arts.

Rank and salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Candidates for Assistant Professor or Associate Professor of Theatre Arts (tenure-track position) must have demonstrated and show promise of the capacity for creative work and the accompanying pedagogy qualifying them for future nomination to tenure. Candidates with the rank of Associate Professor or Professor Theatre Arts (tenured position) must have a record of excellence in teaching and be widely recognized for their distinction and professional accomplishment and demonstrate promise of attaining further distinction.
