I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Maintains all requirements for the Mass Radiation Control Program and NRC.
2. Coordinates the assignment of tasks for the efficient utilization of available resources.
3. Continuous maintenance of modality specific accreditation, ICANL or ACR.
4. Follows all Quality Control policies and procedures for compliance with departmental, local, state and federal regulations.
5. Conducts quarterly radiation safety meetings and document via minutes in a timely fashion.
6. Conducts Quarterly Audits with a medical radiation physicist.
7. Conducts annual review for housekeepers and security staff on receipt of radiopharmaceuticals and cleaning procedures.
8. Prepares records for review by the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO)
9. Complies with the Low-Level Waste program.
10. Uses radiation safety measures and protection devices to comply with government regulations, hospital policy, and to ensure safety of patients and staff.
11. Takes thorough and accurate patient medical histories.
12. Explains procedures and observes patients to ensure safety and comfort during scan.
13. Seeks interpreter services as needed.
14. Utilizes a variety of equipment and follows prescribed procedures.
15. Prepares stock solutions of radiopharmaceutical materials, calculates doses, and administers doses, under direction of a physician.
16. Calibrates equipment.
17. Performs diagnostic studies on patients as prescribed by physician, using scanners, scalers, Geiger counters, or scintillation cameras to measure radiation emitted and to produce image of organ.
18. Operates or positions imaging equipment and adjusts controls to set exposure time and distance, according to specification of examination.
19. Administers therapeutic doses of radiopharmaceuticals under direction of physician.
20. Follows radiation safety techniques in the use and disposal of radioactive materials.
21. Positions and immobilizes patient on examining table and ensures that a quality diagnostic image is produced.
22. Monitors patients' conditions and reactions, reporting abnormal signs to physician.
23. Sets up examination areas, ensuring that all necessary equipment and supplies are available prior to exam.
24. Follows sterile techniques according to hospital policy.
25. Reviews and evaluates computer generated information to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes.
26. Records, processes and maintains patient data and treatment records, and prepares all reports/documentation in a timely and thorough manner.
27. Collaborates with other medical team and administrative staff members, such as physicians and nurses, to conduct procedures or complete administrative duties.
28. Performs scheduled maintenance and minor emergency repairs on equipment or reports problems with equipment or supplies to supervisor.
29. Performs all duties with strict adherence to government regulations, hospital policy and procedure, and safety guidelines.
30. Responsible for overseeing that all staff credentials are up to date. Maintains documentation for continuing education credits, CPR and other training, registration and licensure. Oversees staff licensure requirements are up to date and posted per regulations.
31. Rotates through call schedule.

II. Position Qualifications:


License/Certification/Education:

Required:
1. Graduate of an accredited nuclear medicine program
2. Registered by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) in Nuclear Medicine
3. Licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Health: Radiation Control Program in Nuclear Medicine
4. Must maintain licensure on an annual basis
5. Current certification in CPR
Experience/Skills:

Required:
1. Strong organizational and communication skills
2. Thoroughly knowledgeable in anatomy, patient positioning, examination techniques, equipment protocols, radiation safety, radiation protection and basic patient care
3. Ability to follow procedures and comply with policies consistently
4. Ability to use radiation safety measures and protection devices to comply with government regulations and to ensure safety of patients and staff
5. Ability to explain procedures clearly to patients in English and observe patients to ensure safety and comfort during scans
6. Ability to position and immobilize patient on examining table
7. Ability to operate or oversee operation of equipment, safely produce images of the body for diagnostic purposes
8. Ability to record, process and maintain thorough and accurate patient data, medical histories, treatment records, and prepare reports
9. Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical staff, personnel, students, and patients
10. Ability to read, write and speak clearly in English

Preferred:
1. Minimum 2-3 years of experience as a Radiological Technologist

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description.Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
