Position Summary:
The Design and Manufacturing Specialist positions provide foundational support to the users of the NJIT Makerspace. The specialists are responsible for guiding, assisting, and educating members in the design, fabrication, and prototyping of all parts and projects. Major responsibilities include the maintenance of a safe working environment and the training of members in the use of equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, water jets, manual and CNC metal working equipment, woodworking tools, and other equipment.

The specialists are primarily educators and are responsible for guiding members through design and manufacturing decisions as they relate to the physical creation of parts and assemblies. They preform face to face instruction and provide engineering design and manufacturability feedback and guidance.

The specialists may also be asked to perform machinist tasks and fabricate parts and assemblies for students, researchers, and other entities on campus as needed.

Essential Functions:
- Consult, guide, and assist students, faculty, and staff in the design, manufacturability, and fabrication of parts and projects. Design and fabricate parts and systems for NJIT.
- Coordinate and develop training materials on equipment, processes, software, and technology in the Makerspace. Train students, faculty, and staff on the use of Makerspace resources.
- Supervise use of makerspace equipment and resources to ensure a safe working and learning environment.
- Maintain, manage, and diagnose equipment problems; perform preventative maintenance and plan for equipment installation, service, and replacement.
- Coordinate activities for non-NJIT users (adult training, workforce training, participation from other universities and high schools).
- Manage short- and long-term improvement, maintenance, quality, and educational projects.

Prerequisite Qualifications:
- A baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering or engineering technology, electrical engineering or engineering technology, industrial design, or related fields. Strong instructional, writing, management, interpersonal, presentation, and public speaking skills.
- Familiarity with and ability to operate basic and advanced prototyping equipment such as manual and numerical control metalworking equipment, electronics test and measurement equipment, 3D printers, laser cutters, water jets, metrology equipment, and woodworking equipment.
- At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
