Job Description

Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine, our Addictions Counselors and CASACS are experienced in both Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) techniques as well as counseling and interventions that will assist in identifying, substance use disorder and high -risk patients.

Qualified candidates will demonstrate excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, knowledge and understanding of patient care and effectively respond to changing patient needs by making decisions based on ethical principles and adhering to our high standard of excellence. Qualified candidates will demonstrate the skills to intervene on mild, moderate, and severe Substance Use Disorder patients in the medical setting. Candidates will have a full understanding of integrated health and the benefits of Addiction Counseling in the non-behavioral health inpatient setting. Candidates will have a full understanding of a harm reduction model of care.

Duties of an Addictions Counselor may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Screen Patients - identify patients who need further assessment or treatment for substance use disorders.
  • Offer Brief Intervention - Single session or multiple sessions of motivational discussion.
  • Make Referrals to Treatment - Referral to specialized treatment is provided to patients/families identified as needing more extensive treatment than offered by the SBIRT program.
  • Provide Consultation, Advice & Instruction - Offer guidance and feedback to faculty, staff and residents pertaining to SBIRT process, community resources and supports.
  • Maintain Up-to-Date Knowledge - Participate in County meetings pertaining to addiction and actively report community resource information, new programs/services to key stakeholders.
  • Ensure Quality - Monitor that addiction measures are completed and tracked, i.e. CORE measures and OMH regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate with treatment team and discharge planning team.
  • Attend rounds and run groups.
  • Educate staff on topics applicable to SUD.

Qualifications

Required: Credentialed as an alcoholism and substance abuse counselor (CASAC) within NYS

Preferred: Previous experience in a medical setting. LMSW/LCSW or LMHC with three or more years SUD counseling. Experience in a hospital setting.

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

*The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $58,000 - $70,750 Base.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

In addition, all full time UUP positions have a $3,026 location pay.
