The Rutgers Brain Health Institute and the Department of Psychiatry at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School are recruiting an outstanding physician-scientist as a tenure-track Professor of Psychiatry and to serve as the Director of the Treatment Research Unit (TRU), a key component of the newly created Rutgers University Addiction Research Center (RUARC). The TRU will tie together precision medicine research and clinical treatments by measuring treatment effectiveness as a function of genetics, age, gender, and environment relevant to each individual addict. The TRU will collaborate with clinical entities across Rutgers as well as with the Rutgers Health Network, an integrated network of Rutgers' affiliated hospitals, community clinics, medical groups, wellness centers, and other affiliates across NJ, to provide a wide range of inpatient and outpatient research programs for drug dependent patients. Through the TRU, patients will benefit from substance use research while specialists advance knowledge and develop new therapies that are most effective for each of the many subsets of addiction patients. The TRU will also support Rutgers', local, and state-wide treatment and recovery programs. Participating elements include especially Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS), New Jersey Medical School (NJMS), School of Arts and Sciences, Center for Alcohol Studies, Center for Tobacco Studies, School of Public Health, School of Social Work, School of Nursing, School of Health Professions (SHP), University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), School of Pharmacy, the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research and the affiliated U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in East Orange and Lyons.

In addition to a strong, federally funded research program and fit with the Brain Health Institute are important criteria. The candidate is also expected to work with other members of the Rutgers neuroscience community to develop federally funded training programs in neuroscience.

Overview

The ideal candidate will be a physician-scientist, adept at securing extramural funding to support translational research in substance use disorders. They will work with the Director of RUARC and lead a team to translate research findings to the clinic to improve substance use disorder policies and programs. The research team will find and disseminate practical, science-based solutions to address an array of addictions-related public health problems. Candidates with expertise in opioid addiction, or who can apply their experience in other substance use disorders to opioid addiction, will be of particular interest. With two teaching hospitals, over 250 neuroscience faculty labs in Newark, New Brunswick and Piscataway, as well as proximity to the New York, Princeton and Philadelphia neuroscience communities, Rutgers offers tremendous collaborative opportunities and core facilities to support and grow outstanding research and training programs. Rutgers UBHC has partnerships with the New Jersey Department of Corrections and Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services with access to large EHR databases. Rutgers NJMS operates the Northern NJ Center of Excellence in Medication-Assisted Treatment. With a newly awarded NIH CTSA, Rutgers also offers unique opportunities to speed the translation of research discoveries into improved patient care. Outstanding core facilities will support this position, including a new 3T MRI scanner and a human behavioral testing core developed in collaboration with Princeton University.
