Posting Summary
The Department of Emergency Medicine at Rutgers, New Jersey Medical School is seeking a qualified candidate to serve in the role of Vice Chair for Research of the Department of Emergency Medicine. The candidate will be eligible for a faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or greater pending experience. The VCR will serve as a leader in advancing the research mission of the department. The VCR will work collaboratively with the chair and vice chairs for academic affairs and clinical operations to ensure all missions of the department are respected and advanced. The VCR oversees and provides mentoring of faculty, fellows, residents, and medical students in their research efforts and provides oversight of compliance with ethical and other regulatory research practices. The VCR will maintain a robust, externally funded personal research program, and part of their efforts will be to increase the depth and breadth of the research and scholarly portfolio of the faculty, particularly extramural funding opportunities. The VCR will also represent the department within Rutgers and leverage research opportunities within governmental (such as NIH, AHRQ, CDC, NJ) and non-governmental organizations (such as SAEM, EMF, AAMC). The Vice-Chair will play a role in the recruitment and retention of diverse faculty members and fellows.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
Ph.D. in epidemiology, global health, healthcare delivery science and innovation, health services research, population health or a related field or Doctor of Medicine or equivalent, with appropriate training and/or experience
Demonstrate ethical conduct, professionalism, interpersonal skills, and organizational management abilities to direct and develop academic physicians and support staff effectively
Experience and productivity in academic emergency medicine research, as evidenced by scholarship, publications, grant funding, and national academic activities.
Experience in administration at a unit or department level is desired
Experience in guiding and mentoring junior faculty, fellows, resident physicians, and medical students in research activities
Possess professional recognition within national professional and scientific organizations
Able to build constructive collaborative academic relationships with other academic departments and external organizations
Demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in academic medicine
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in spoken and written form
If a physician must have excellent training and clinical skills

Overview
Responsibilities

1. Collaborate with department leadership to advance the departmental missions of the department while leading its research program
2. Develop in concert with the Chair a strategic plan for the pursuit of innovation and excellence in all research and scholarly activities, setting vision and goals for departmental clinical and translational research
3. Advise the Chair regarding departmental research programmatic and personnel needs and monitor appropriate funding agencies for new opportunities
4. Oversee all research related financial concerns within the research program, including internal and external grants and contracts
5. Create and foster a culture of inquiry, research, and scholarship within the department through mentorship and support with a focus on obtaining extramural funding and dissemination of findings
6. Assure a diverse and inclusive research environment, including a focus on health disparities or community based participatory research
7. Identify, pursue, and obtain personal extramural funding and publish the results in high-impact journals
8. Ensure compliance with all regulatory and research ethical principles
9. Provide or develop representation of the department and school on relevant school, state, and national organizations and committees
10. Collaborate with institution wide research efforts , including the Senior Associate Dean of Research
11. Collaborate with department educational leadership to enhance and innovate the research curriculum and its delivery in the training programs
12. Develop and direct a departmental research fellowship, such as a T32.

Performance Metrics (general)

1. Establish an independent, externally funded, sustainable emergency medicine research enterprise
2. Increase external funding of departmental research efforts
3. Increase the submission and success of grant applications
4. Improve departmental peer-reviewed publication portfolio through mentorship of faculty
5. Increase faculty and house staff participation in research and scholarship
6. Increase research collaborations, including interdepartmental and multicenter efforts
