Job Description

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City is a vibrant community of exceptional scientists and clinician-scientists who recognize the fundamental importance of diversity as a key driver of innovation in science. The Division of Research seeks a full-time faculty member at the rank of Professor to serve as Scientific Grant and Communications Writer.

The successful candidate will play an integral role.

Job Responsibilities:

As faculty the Scientific Grant and Communications Writer will:

  • Educate residents, fellows and young faculty in the basics of grantsmanship, and elements of a competitive grant application.
  • Collaborate with faculty in the preparation of new and ongoing individual investigator-led grants including editing, writing, and coordinating research- and grant-related documents to support the Department's research efforts
  • Work with faculty in the preparation of new and ongoing manuscript submissions.
  • Work closely with faculty in the design and creation of new, innovative training grants in areas relevant to women's health research.
  • Identify funding opportunities, locate suitable applicants, provide support with proposal preparation, and work with investigators and other staff to ensure timely submission of proposals to maximize external research funding.
  • Develop and implement writing strategies for the efficient preparation of strategically aligned, consistently framed and properly positioned scientific writing deliverables.
  • Edit highly technical documents under tight deadlines.
  • Maintain relationships with unit leaders and faculty to increase proposal development capabilities and faculty's success in achieving funding
  • Perform other related duties to the work described herein and in line with the office's mission.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree in Advanced life sciences (MD or PhD)
  • Three years of experience in successful (funded) grant development, writing individual and team proposals and facilitating submission of grant proposals.
  • Experience in writing grants, including NIH R01 proposals.
  • Experience writing and editing research manuscripts.
  • Experience managing multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines. Strong customer service orientation to understand and assist a wide range of internal faculty.
  • Requires a highly organized, enthusiastic and personable individual with strong writing and presentation skills as well as previous grant writing/submission experience.
  • Requires flexibility and time-management skills, including the ability to prioritize among a large number of diverse responsibilities.
  • Must be able to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment as well as work collaboratively and adapt to changing processes and procedures.
  • Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills required.
  • Capability to work both independently and as a team member in-person and remotely, ability to multi-task and respond professionally in challenging situations is essential.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications (i.e., Outlook, Excel, and Word)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience writing and coordinating multidisciplinary sponsored research and private grant proposals with multiple collaborators for a variety of funding sources.
  • Experience using and implementing collaboration and document management platforms, such as Sharepoint, Teams or similar for project management
